Richard R. Marcus, Ph.D. is Full Professor of Global Studies at California State University, Long Beach, where he has served as Founding Chair of the Department of Global Studies, Founding Director of the Global Studies Institute, Founding Director of the MA in International Affairs, and Co-Founding Director of the Beach Institute for Dialogue and Community. A multilingual scholar with experience across eight countries, he has served as PI or Co-PI on over $3 million in grants. He is the author of two books and more than five dozen articles and book chapters, has been a visiting scholar at Ben Gurion University (Israel), the University of Toamasina (Madagascar), and the University of Nairobi (Kenya), and has two decades of experience as an advisor or consultant for the World Bank, United Nations, and other agencies. His current book project is entitled At the Edges of Peoplehood: Micro-Minority Jews from East Africa to the Andes and the Politics of Recognition. Dr. Marcus is a two-time recipient of the CSULB President’s Award for Outstanding Faculty Achievement (2020, 2026) and created CSULB’s only general education course on Jewish identity. He served as Founding National Director of Education at the Museum of Tolerance and President of the Board of Directors of Jewish Long Beach.
Dr. Marcus is a recipient of the 2026 ISGAP Faculty Fellowship Training Program: Combatting Holocaust Distortion and Global Antisemitism.
