MDC & ISGAP LAUNCH JOINT RESEARCH UNIT
STUDYING RACISM AND RADICALISM,
INCLUDING ANTISEMITISM, IN THE MIDDLE EAST
TEL AVIV, September 28, 2026 — The Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies (MDC) at Tel Aviv University, led by Professor Amos Nadan, and the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy (ISGAP), led by Dr. Charles Asher Small, have established a joint research unit based at MDC. The new MDC–ISGAP Research Unit will study the ideologies of extremism, radicalization, antisemitism and other forms of discrimination in the Middle East and the Muslim world, drawing on the research strengths of both institutions.
The collaboration is designed to support sustained, in-depth research on the historical roots and contemporary forms of these phenomena. The unit will provide a framework for rigorous scholarship and discussion across disciplines, producing work that can inform public and policy debates.
“We announced this collaboration at the recent ISGAP–Cambridge Summer Institute. With the agreement now finalized, we are excited to formally launch the research unit. We believe that combining MDC’s research capabilities with ISGAP’s expertise and international scholarly network will make a substantial contribution to the academic study of the ideologies of extremism radicalization and antisemitism, in the Middle East and the Muslim world,” said Dr. Charles Asher Small and Professor Amos Nadan in a joint statement.
The unit will include two Senior Research Fellows at MDC: Dr. Charles Asher Small, ISGAP’s Executive Director, a scholar of contemporary antisemitism and Dr. Dina Lisnyansky, a scholar of radicalism in Muslim contexts. The unit’s fellows will teach in their areas of expertise in the new international Master’s program in Applied Middle East Studies. They will be joined by three early-career researchers, most of whom will hold postdoctoral fellowships. Researchers from across MDC will also have opportunities to participate in the unit’s activities. The fellows will take part in research seminars, receive academic guidance, and present their work for discussion at MDC.
The joint program also includes academic courses on antisemitism in the Middle East, research publications, student support, workshops, seminars and conferences organized by the two institutions.

The Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies at Tel Aviv University (MDC) and the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy (ISGAP) jointly invite outstanding researchers to apply for postdoctoral and doctoral fellowships for the 2026-2027 academic year.
The research will be conducted at the Moshe Dayan Center within the newly established MDC- ISGAP Research Unit. The unit studies racism and radicalism, the ideologies of extremism and antisemitism, in the Middle East and the Muslim world.
We welcome applications both from scholars already working in this field and from scholars who have not previously studied it but are willing and able to devote part of their research to it. The fellowships are awarded for one year, with the possibility of extension. Applicants must have command of at least one principal research language other than Hebrew or English.
