Antisemitism in North Africa and the Middle East in Comparative Perspective

Series Description: Despite the Jewish presence in countries such as Iraq or Morocco for millennia, often deemed a “Golden Age” for coexistence and Jewish rights, the status of the Jewish community was far from equal. The exodus of Jews from Muslim countries in the years following modern Israel’s establishment has not eased tensions. Rather, it has opened up space for increasing and spreading antisemitism, including among Muslim communities in countries such as Belgium and France. Additionally, Iran and its proxies have sought weaponize historic antisemitism through terrorist campaigns. And as we have seen post-October 7th, that has only led to an entrenchment of antisemitic propaganda being spread throughout the region. This seminar series is critical to those understanding the background of the current tensions between the Jewish state and its neighbors, as well as how terrorism and October 7th have created challenges for those seeking to bring peace to this troubled region and its peoples.
